Katherine Meredith is an accomplished portrait artist who has been painting portraits professionally for over twenty years. She works primarily in oils but also enjoys watercolor and charcoal drawing.
Her painterly style blends realism and impressionism to create a superb likeness within a gracefully composed painting. "I look for the beauty and uniqueness of each subject and strive to capture that spirit in paint through light, color, composition, texture, and mood. I especially enjoy the collaboration between artist and client."
She started drawing at the age of three, specializing in portraits of family members. In 1976, she got her first big break when she won Kellogg's "Stick up for Breakfast " contest, for which the prize was" five dollars a week allowance for a whole year!" (It was not spent wisely.)
A native of Baltimore, MD, she is a graduate of New York University and has lived most of her adult life in New York and California.
During her years in Los Angeles, Ms. Meredith worked as a textile designer, storyboard artist, muralist, set painter for theatre and film, and provided paintings for the set decoration of the "Paris" Casino in Las Vegas. Her mural work has appeared in Vibe and InStyle magazines. These experiences in other areas of art inform and enhance her portraiture.
Ms. Meredith is a member of the Portrait Society of America and currently studies with Palden Hamilton at Zoll Studio in Baltimore. She has attended a variety of workshops and recently had the pleasure of studying with Everett Raymond Kintsler.
She currently lives in Maryland with her husband, graphic designer Jim Cantwell, their son Henry and daughter Stella.
